Eternal rest grant to them, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon them. May they Rest in Peace.
CAN'T AFFORD A FUNERAL FOR A LOVED ONE?
Catholic Charities assists families in need of financial assistance with funeral expenses with a $100 donation
when the deceased was not covered by any type of life or burial coverage and the surviving family members are low income
and unable to pay for the funeral expenses on their own. The deceased family member must have lived within the area of
the Diocese of Houma Thibodaux. Donations are paid directly to the local funeral home assisting with the burial.
Tips on how to keep the funeral expenses as low as possible are given at the time the application is taken.
For example: Wooden, cloth covered caskets (which are hundreds of dollars cheaper than the metal caskets)
are available at all funeral homes but the family must request this type of casket
as the funeral home may not have one available in their showroom.
While it is overwhelming for a family to experience the death of a loved one, we have witnessed that over a short period of time
family, friends, and acquaintances of the deceased also come forward with donations to help the family pay the burial expenses.
Some families have put together garage sales and held benefit dinners to help raise the money needed for the funeral expenses.
Other Social Service agencies may also provide donations to help cover the costs. The family could ask the funeral home
for suggestions of which Social Service agencies have provided donations to them in the past.
